Nik's book blog

I am currently writing my 2nd novel with the goal to have the first draft completed by the summer of 2019. My 1st novel will be published in 2019. I hope you will join me on my journey as I share my thoughts with you over the coming months

Progress update!

Good evening Ideal Readers!

Only just had a chance to do some writing in the last hour or so. It's been hectic today.

Anyway...I've just penned 1,200 words in a great scene, which answers another of the questions from earlier in the novel.

So the novel is now 68,200+ words so far.

I've been writing tonight whilst listening to some of my fave music by Dio. Great music, like great writing always inspires me.

Ronnie James Dio is one of the most beloved figures in rock history. His gifts, both as a singer and songwriter, are instantly recognizable, whether he was with Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, or leading Dio. Sadly, Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer in 2010 but his towering voice and legacy live on.

To celebrate one of rock’s most powerful voices, an all-star group of his friends and fans recorded 13 of their favorite tracks for Ronnie James Dio - This Is Your Life. The album that will raise funds for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. Produced by his longtime manager and wife Wendy Dio, the album includes contributions by such metal heavyweights as Metallica, Motörhead, Scorpions, Anthrax, and Rob Halford, as well as appearances by many of the musicians who performed with Dio over the years.

With 9 brand new recordings from a star-studded group of artists, this album is a fitting tribute to the legend that is Ronnie James Dio.

Just to reiterate that I've also been writing edition #5 of my newsletter, which will be published on Sunday 21st September. Remember that your free subscription will immediately enter you into a draw (which will be made on 30th September 2014) to receive a signed copy of the novel once it goes into print!

Have a great evening everyone.

Part 7 of the novel

Good afternoon everyone,

I've written 1000 words towards a couple of new scenes and that now takes the total word count to 67,000+

I've tied up one of the unanswered questions from the start of the novel today, so I am feeling quite pleased with myself with that!

Part 7 of the novel is now over 11,000 words - it could be a book in itself almost...

Apart from writing and reading, I'm catching up with my fave TV shows (Sons of Anarchy, Da Vinci's Demons and one which I've just started watching, Tyrant).

Enjoy the rest of your day everyone.

Great new scene written today!

Good evening everyone,

I've written 1400 words towards a new scene that I dreamt up this morning, which puts the total word count to 66,000+ now.

The pieces of the jigsaw are slowly been put together.

Evening update!

Evening everyone.

Well I've been writing late this evening for a change. Been really busy the rest of the day, so only had the chance to properly concentrate this evening after I watched the first episode of the new season of Sons Of Anarchy.  Awesome as always.

So I've just written just over 1,000 new words, which takes the total word count to 64,300+

As I mentioned yesterday, the goal this week is to reach 70,000, so I'm well on course to hit that currently.

I'll catch you all tomorrow with another update.

Progress today

Evening everyone!

Just a very quick thank you to all of those who "attended" my newsletter launch on Facebook this lunchtime. It is so amazing to have your support and interest in my project.

Equally important are all of my subscribers. You are an important part of the project and will continue to be foremost in my mind as I continue to write the novel. I have a clear path which I will take over the next few months and I will of course share this with you at each stage and as each new milestone is reached.

Well even though I've been busy entertaining and cooking today for family, I've still (as always) managed to write over 1,000 new words today, which takes the total word count to 63,300+

The goal this week is to reach 70,000

How many words am I aiming for?  I can't answer that just yet, so I will just say that as I am aiming to complete the first draft in the next 4 weeks, then that should give you an idea, where I am at this moment in time.

Have a nice evening everyone and I hope the week ahead is good to you all.

The development of my new character

Happy Saturday afternoon everyone!

Well I've managed to cram in some writing today, in between making a potato salad for tomorrow (http://www.inspiredtaste.net/22809/simple-potato-salad-recipe/) and doing the Saturday shopping.

I'm happy with the development of my new character so far. It will be interesting to see how he interacts with the other main characters later on in the novel.

edition #4 of my newsletter is now written and will be published on Sunday 14th September. Remember that your free subscription will immediately enter you into a draw (which will be made on 30th September 2014) to receive a signed copy of the novel once it goes into print!

Just about to treat myself to a takeaway Chinese meal and settle down to watch the football at 5.30pm.

Have a great day everyone!

Hope to blog more later.

Progress update & newsletter edition #4

Good afternoon everyone.

I've written just over 1500 words today and some cool scenes. Part 7 of the novel is going well and the new characters I've introduced are working really well in these scenes.

I started reading Gone by Mo Hayder the other evening, Really enjoying it. Her knowledge and insight of UK police forces has been very helpful for this stage of my novel...

I've also been writing edition #4 of my newsletter, which will be published on Sunday 14th September. Remember that your free subscription will immediately enter you into a draw (which will be made on 30th September 2014) to receive a signed copy of the novel once it goes into print!

Have a great day everyone!

Hope to blog more later.

Another milestone reached!

Good afternoon everyone.

Well I've really been busy this morning. I've just finished writing a really intense and gripping scene.

It has now taken my total word count to over 60,000!

So the next target for the coming days, is 70,000 (gulp!)

Have a great day everyone.

Hope to blog more later.

The Balloon Race by Dave Foster

The Balloon Race - David Foster

Have you ever wondered what life would be like without TV, airplanes or telephones?” So starts the blurb on the back cover of the book with its glossy cover and beautiful artwork by Antonio Seijas. This work of fiction by Dave Foster is in the fantasy genre and doffs its cap to many influences. It is a sort of cross between early Tolkien and Pullman and lots more in between. It will be enjoyed by children and adults alike. It never tries to dress itself up to be something that it is not. It’s unashamedly an allegory about the dangers of global warming, climate change and a quest for a source of free, sustainable, clean energy; but looking beyond any hidden depths that it may contain, it’s simple, to the point, and a classic tale of three friends on a quest.

The Balloon Race is set in a fictional world where it hasn't seen World War I or World War II and as the phrase 'Necessity is the mother of invention' suggests, these wars brought on great leaps in technology, most of our modern comforts are yet to appear in this world. This story follows a small group of friends on their journey to seek a better life away from the dismal and smokey town that they live in. Ballooning is the mode of long distance travel here in a country where the state controlled coal factories belch out dark fog over its occupants, there are alternatives but the illegitimate King of Anvil wouldn’t benefit from them and isn’t keen on his subjects discovering these alternatives and will stop at nothing to make sure it stays that way.”

Dave states in his introduction that he is not a writer. With the book being written in the third-person, subjective present tense, personally I did find the first few pages quite difficult to read. It reminded me very much of the early chapters of The Hobbit in the charming way that Tolkien describes Bilbo and the Shire. I persevered and the story overcame my personal difficulties in reading the tale. Dave’s writing improves as the book progresses, so he should be congratulated. The grammar or punctuation are not 100% correct and a bit more proof-reading before publication wouldn’t have gone amiss in my opinion (e.g. “The law that states that it is illegal to uses anything other than coal as a fuel source...” and “The Watch is on organisation that polices Anvil...”). But again, I was able to overcome that and enjoy the story. The interaction between the characters and the growth and change of the main character, was interesting. It is interspersed with moments of humour that did have me chuckling. These moments of humour weren’t necessary to the telling of the story, but they were a welcome addition nonetheless. How well did the book meet its goals? It wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but if you want to be taken on a journey and read a story with a beginning, middle and end, then this book has certainly achieved its objectives.

If you are looking to read a classic tale about the journey that three friends have on a quest to improve the way of life in their world, then I do recommend it. It will be enjoyed by children and adults alike. Oh, by the way Dave, I did enjoy it and you ARE a writer! You’ve inspired me to finish my own novel. As you say, “It’s in the finishing of a story where the joy lies”. I bet you had fun writing the book. Can we have a sequel to The Balloon Race please!

Progress update!

Good afternoon ideal readers!

I've got some great scenes written today for part 7 of the novel. I've written just over 2000 words today, which takes my total word count to nearly 59,000. On track to hit the target of 60,000 this week!

Wasps...

Good morning everyone!

well I had a delayed start to the writing schedule this morning while a man from the local council got rid of some annoying wasps that had decided to make themselves at home under some roof tiles over the kitchen window. Thankfully it seems to have worked!

And it got me thinking about a novel that I bought sometime around 1992/93 while waiting for a train at Reading station, The Wasp Factory by the much missed Iain Banks. It was the first novel by him and was published in 1984. I have re-read it many times over the last 20 years and am always surprised/shocked/invigorated when I do read it. It truly is a masterpiece and I highly recommend it, as well as Banks's other novels (Espedair Street is another of my favourites).

Two years after I killed Blyth I murdered my young brother Paul, for quite different reasons than I'd disposed of Blyth, and then a year after that I did for my young cousin Esmerelda, more or less on a whim. That's my score to date. Three. I haven't killed anybody for years, and don't intend to ever again. It was just a stage I was going through.

Enter - if you can bear it - the extraordinary private world of Frank, just sixteen, and unconventional, to say the least.

Daniel Weir used to be a famous - not to say infamous - rock star. Maybe still is. At thirty-one he has been both a brilliant failure and a dull success. He's made a lot of mistakes that have paid off and a lot of smart moves he'll regret forever (however long that turns out to be). Daniel Weir has gone from rags to riches and back, and managed to hold onto them both, though not much else. His friends all seem to be dead, fed up with him or just disgusted - and who can blame them?

Length of the novel!

Good afternoon!

Just a quick update - I've made a great start to the part 7 of the novel with just over 1,000 words written so far today, which nicely sets up the scenes to come. All this is happening in the background to the main thrust of the novel, but it will be important as it will tie in with where I left part 6 and then provide the momentum for the remainder of the novel.

As I am typing the manuscript in A4 format, I wondered how my novel would look in paperback size (6" x 9") as that's the format the printed version will eventually go out in.

I wish you could have seen the look on my face as the first draft in paperback format is over 400 pages at the moment! To say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement! The finished first draft could well be 700-800 pages long. Never in my wildest dreams would I have envisioned that at the start of this project!

Well back to writing and have a great evening everyone!

Nik

Just about to start part 7 of the novel

Good morning all,

just about to start part 7 of the novel. Cup of green tea nearby.

One of the benefits of writing this blog is the connection with other writers and authors that I have made over the past few months. Not only are they are a great source of inspiration and support, but you also find some novels that you must absolutely put on your reading list.

One such author is Alysha Kaye, a Texan teacher and upcoming author.

As soon as I read the blurb on her novel, The Waiting Room, I knew I had to read it!

Well I hope to blog more later, so until then, have a great day everyone.

Nik

Exciting times ahead!

Good evening everyone!

I've had another interesting day writing and got over 1,500 words done, taking the current word count to over 55,600!

I've ended the current part of the novel on a great cliff-hanger/twist and am now starting to write Part 7 of the novel. It's almost a novel within a novel, but is going to be an important sub-plot all the same.

This could prove to be the most ambitious part of the novel, but I'm going to go with the flow and just go for it.

By the time I complete Part 7, then I will dive back into answering the questions from the first 6 parts and then the first draft should be complete (fingers crossed!)

I've also been looking into cover art for the novel and have some really interesting ideas which I hope to share with my subscribers in the next few editions of the newsletter.

Exciting times ahead!

This is Nik, signing off (for the night)... ;-)

Good evening everyone!

Good evening everyone.

Well I've had a great day today and I hope yours was too. Entertained my 80 year old dad for a few hours this afternoon and I cooked Amritsari fish with a kachumber salad and it tasted amazing. I even managed to spend an hour or so writing 1,070 words, which has now taken my total word count for the novel to 54,021!

If any of you love Indian food, then I highly recommend Rick Stein's India book. It features the recipe I cooked today and lots more amazing recipes. Definitely one of my favourite books.

Good evening everyone and I will blog more tomorrow.
